Janet Brenner, MA
Song Repertoire, Song Performance
Janet is an acting teacher, vocal coach and musical theater
repertoire consultant. She is on the faculty of CAP21 where
she teaches NYU/Tisch theater majors and on the faculty of
the Professional Program at CAP21. In addition, Janet works
with students and professional actors in audition
technique, vocal performance and building song repertoire.
She also teaches a Master Class on musical theater for
opera singers.
Janet has extensive knowledge of and experience in many
aspects of the theater industry. She produced the
off-Broadway hit CLOSER THAN EVER (Outer Critics' Circle
Award for Best Off-Broadway Musical); wrote and conceived
the musical, THE 60’s PROJECT (produced at Trinity Rep,
CAP21 and Goodspeed Musicals); co-founded a theater company
in Washington, CT; produced LOVE LETTERS with James Earl
Jones, SIBLING REVELRY with Liz Callaway and Ann Hampton
Callaway, AN EVENING WITH STEPHEN SONDHEIM AND JAMES
LAPINE, AN EVENING WITH ALFRED UHRY, readings by author
Frank McCourt, and a variety show hosted by Conan O’Brien.
She recently directed the NYC reading on HELLO MY BABY
(music direction by Georgia Stitt).
Janet trained as an opera singer (B.M. Cleveland Institute
of Music), and received an M.A. in Arts Administration from
New York University. She worked at Playwright’s Horizons,
the Metropolitan Opera and was Acting Director of the
Opera-Musical Theater Program at the National Endowment for
the Arts.
She is currently President of the Board of Directors for
Young Playwrights Inc, and a Board member of CAP21.
